JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) flanges and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) flanges are both pipe flanges, but they have some critical differences.
At Carlson Company we sere industries including petroleum refining, petrochemical, heavy industrial, food processing utility and transportation. We machine and drill TEMA, ANSI and blind flanges both large and small and provide custom solutions and special orders.
JIS Flanges
Typically used in Japan and other Asian countries, they have a smaller size range than ANSI flanges. They also have a lower pressure rating, with most JIS flanges rated for no more than 150 pounds per square inch (PSI). The bolt holes on JIS flanges are also typically smaller than those on ANSI flanges, and the flanges are usually made from lighter-weight materials.
ANSI Flanges
They are commonly used and produced in the United States and other countries that use the imperial measurement system. They have a more extensive size range and higher pressure rating, with most ANSI flanges rated for up to 300 PSI. The bolt holes on ANSI flanges are also typically larger than those on JIS flanges, which are usually made from heavier-weight materials.
Which Industrial Flange Should You Choose?
When choosing between JIS and ANSI flanges, it is essential to consider the specific application and requirements of the project. If the project is in Japan or another Asian country, JIS flanges may be the more appropriate choice. However, if the project is in the United States or another country that uses the imperial measurement system, then ANSI flanges may be the better option.
In general, JIS flanges are used in lower pressure and lower temperature applications, while ANSI flanges are used in higher force and higher temperature applications.
It’s also important to note that both JIS and ANSI flanges have different types, such as JIS B2220 and JIS B2238 for JIS flanges and ANSI B16.5 and ANSI B16.47 for ANSI flanges. Each class has additional pressure and temperature ratings and dimension standards. It’s essential to choose the correct type for the intended application.
